Rise of the Sourdough Warmers

Sourdough fermentation is a key tool for your sourdough baking. In 2023 the market gave rise to the Sourdough Home (Brod and Taylor) and also the Goldie (Sourhouse). We take a look at the pros and cons of what’s now available.

The Brod and Taylor Folding Proofer

Images of the Brod and Taylor Folding Proofer

The folding proofer has been on the market for a while. It’s a compact device that can fold up for handy storage. For a long time, it’s been the only offering on the market.

We love:

  • Great versatility: can ferment both sourdough, larger doughs and more
  • Folds always conveniently

Negatives:

  • Feels a little bit dated and excessive for just sourdough.

The Goldie by Sourhouse

Images of the Goldie warmer

The Goldie just pipped Brod and Taylor to a release in 2024. This specialist chamber is made for monitoring your sourdough starter. Goldie claims to keep your starter resting in the ‘Goldilocks’ temperature range between 75 and 82ºF.

Out of the box, the device comes with a USB charger. A power adaptor can be easily added.

We like:

  • Modern design looks great and enticing on a kitchen surface
  • Being able to see our starter
  • Convenience and peace of mind

Negatives:

  • Cooling puck that needs freezing to offer cooling
  • Glass could prove a risk and hazard.

Sourdough Home

Like the Folding Proofer, The Sourdough Home is made by Brod and Taylor. This fridge-like design not only warms but cools your jar of starter. It looks like a small white fridge.

We like:

  • Automatically cools your starter
  • Made from robust and sturdy materials

Negatives:

  • Our sourdough starter is hidden by a door
