Einkorn is the first cultivated wheat variety.
This historic grain is related to durum wheat. One of the earliest grains to be grown was organic Einkorn, which is said to have originated in the Middle East more than 20,000 years ago. It can be consumed whole or ground into wholesome flour.

About Gilchesters Flour and Grain

Gilchesters was first located on the site of a Roman fort. The grains were first grown conscientiously, organically, and alongside livestock. The founders, Andrew and Bille Wilkinson, rotated the fields to preserve the land’s mineral content.

Gilchesters changed hands in March 2023 and is now run and managed by Oscar Harding and Laura Henderson from Duchess Farm.

Gilchesters flour and grain are known for their quality and superb taste.

We’ve been milling grains from our farm for 16 years, with the mission of providing the best stone-ground organic flour for professional and home bakers. We’re trailblazers in our dedication to heritage grains grown for nutritional benefit and flavour. We’ve grown our local business from 1 tonne/month to 40t/month, and we’re so grateful for the loyalty and support of our customers.

After the pressures of lockdown, we realised that we needed to find young people to take over Gilchesters Organics to ensure its future success. We found Oscar Harding and Laura Henderson from Duchess Farm, who share our ethos and strive for quality. They already have milling experience, and we are delighted to hand the business over to them. We have been training their staff for many months, and everyone is ready and eager to take over. Of course, Gilchesters grains will still be used in Gilchesters flour!
